Yoga no better than stretching for bad backs
Yoga no better than stretching for bad backs
Yoga is no more effective at relieving back pain than doing stretches, a study has found.
“I obviously appreciate that the Yoga methodology used in the study is the viniyoga of Yoga.
However I feel what it is being missed is that the very nature of the word viniyoga is the personalised application of Yoga according to each person’s story and their current health and life situation.
For this to work the meeting has to be just one teacher and one student, which, from all the evidence, was Krishnamacharya’s priority aside from specific group situations such as teaching children Āsana or studying Yoga philosophy.”

On Yoga and Health in the KYM with TKV Desikachar
Whilst living in Chennai through 1980 I recorded a video of an Indian TV programme about the work of the KYM in the field of Yoga and Health. Recently I had the video cassette digitalised and shared it as an online downloadable with students.
From here it has made its way onto YouTube and open source viewing.

TKV Desikachar and AG Mohan, the co-founders of Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, with some of the Yoga Teaching and Yoga Therapy Faculty, Menaka Desikachar, Indra Mohan, R Prabhakar and (sorry can’t remember just now as she was the only person in the picture that I did not have lessons with at some point, maybe Laksmi?) alongside Jenny and myself in 1980.
Those were very good times and a typical week during my two year stay meant that I could have lessons with my root teacher TKV Desikachar and also S Ramaswami in their homes as well as further lessons with such as Mohan, Menaka, Indra, and others in the KYM, which in those days hosted a young, vibrant and independently thinking faculty community based around T Krishnamacharya’s presence and still vital teaching, even though 92 in 1980.

Krishnamacharya ‘stopping’ ( or at least slowing) his heart, medical journal article Presse Medicale-1936
REPOSTED WITH A TRANSLATION BY MATTHIEU BONETTI OF THE ORIGINAL 1936 PRESSE MEDICALE ARTICLE
“The article is heavy going in places but if your short of time jump to the results section, skimming through get a feel for the experiments that took place and allow free reign to your imagination.”
Salutations to the Teacher and the Eternal One – T Krishnamacharya
This is an extract from a post today on Anthony Grim Hall’s
excellent Blog and Resource website

“I was passed this document recently called Salutations to the Teacher and the Eternal One purportedly by T. Krishnamacharya. I received it from two sources. one asked me to only share it with somebody who asked directly and I’ve respected that. I’ve since received the text from another source with no conditions attached and so have decided to share it.”

Interviewer: What if people started calling it Desikachar Yoga? Would that ruin it too because you suddenly have a label?
Desikachar: It is really murdering – they are murdering my spirit! What I have received is from my teacher and what he received is from his teacher. There is a lineage of more than 2000 years. How can they label this Desikachar? They are murdering me because they are murdering my teacher.
Interviewer: If they named it after your father that wouldn’t be good either?
Desikachar: No, my father would be in tears. Whatever he invented, he never said he invented it. I know that he innovated things, but he would never say ‘it is mine’. That is the Indian philosophy of humility and respect for the teacher. They always would say, ‘my teacher taught this to me.’
