The viniyoga of Yoga – Two Day Core Workshop May 19/20th 2018

The Art of the viniyoga of Yoga Core Workshop
– Āsana, Prāṇāyāma, Mantra & Sūtra Study & Practice

This Workshop is offered as a starting point for students wishing to explore the viniyoga of Yoga but finding the range of Yoga practice and study options in the cYs Programme offering too many initial choices. Thus this two day workshop draws together a number of the core practice and study strands that this approach specialises in into one composite workshop. From this hands-on experience developmental choices will become clearer.

“Our Yoga practice needs to be a conscious deepening of what we can do.
Rather than becoming an unconscious re-enforcing of what we can’t do.”

The Art of viniyoga of Yoga – Core Study & Practice Workshop is limited to a maximum of five students to allow for a personalised approach and in-depth transmission between teacher and student. It introduces the student, through a 2 day workshop, to the primary principles and teachings from T Krishnamacharya and TKV Desikachar on the art of viniyoga or application of Yoga.

The Art of Observing the Breath in Āsana

Two Day Yoga Intensive January 6/7th 2017

at the Naim Yoga Studio Tel Aviv, Israel

with Paul Harvey on

The Art of Observing the Breath in Āsana

This two day intensive on the art of observing the Breath in Āsana is offered for all interested in the core structural and energetic principles that guide the role for the breath in Āsana.

We will explore T Krishnamacharya and TKV Desikachar’s teachings on Haṭha Yoga and their relationship to modern Kinesiological processes as well as to ancient traditions.

It is offered for all Yoga students, teachers and trainee teachers from any training background interested in the principles that support refining and developing the breath in our personal Āsana practice according to the core principles within the teachings from Haṭha Yoga.

Each session will help us to develop, through presentation, practical demonstration, small group interaction and personal practice experience, how we can:

  • Establish primary observation foci for the Breath
  • Establish secondary observation foci for the Breath
  • Appreciate the respiratory energetic priorities within Haṭha Yoga
  • Apply the respiratory energetic priorities within Haṭha Yoga
  • Appreciate the value of casual and intentional observation
  • Link psychological and physiological observation
  • Learn to evaluate the inhale, exhale and possibilities for holding the breath

The practical and theory work around observation of the breath in Āsana will be supported by ongoing and relevant examples on how to observe the breath and how to set appropriate short term and long term goals for the breath within students Āsana practice.

From this we can facilitate a deeper, more effective and progressive practice through developing direct insight and appreciation of how structural respiratory patterns may be:

  • Unhelpful in terms of health, well being and attitude
  • Inadequate in that they reinforce existing postural patterns

Finally we will explore how to integrate the structural and energetic aspects of Āsana practice into the deeper potentials of Yoga.

Postscript:

Posting this travel and teaching news evoked a reflection and realisation that this visit marks a 20 year anniversary since my first teaching visit to Israel in 1996.

The theme for that 1996 visit was “Prāṇa, Patañjali and Practice”.

A continuing and developing thread it seems to this day except that over this time a community of committed students has evolved so I find myself not just introducing, but being able to expand and deepen the exploration of these three primary Yoga themes. That of Haṭha, Rāja and Sādhana.

It is also a welcome aspect not just to be able to return and deepen teachings but also to be able to leave knowing there are home resources in place for interested students to be able to follow up with and from.

My gratitude, thanks and love around this to Ziva Kinrot for a friendship and studentship that stretches back to 1995 when we first met, curiously enough, in Switzerland.

The confidence that I feel in being able to visit and share more teachings, from the wellspring that Krishnamacharya tapped into and left available, knowing that I am able to leave students in the capable and respectful hands of Ziva, along with those who trained with her, is what draws me back here again and again.

Thus I look forward to this visit and to returning in 2017 and 2018, with dates in the diary and teaching themes already in place as part of a three year project.
