The Art of Personal Sādhana aims to reflect the fundamentals of Śrī T Krishnamacharya and TKV Desikachar’s teaching, namely transmission occurs through the direct experience of the teacher with the student’s personal Yoga Sādhana through 121 Lessons or Small Group Studies limited to a maximum of five students.
As a student we need to consider the five fundamental practice areas that need to be prioritised and developed according to the teachings of Krishnamacharya.
These are the practice of Āsana or general postures, Mudrā or special postures, Prāṇāyāma or seated breathing, Dhyānam or seated meditation and Chanting for learning or as a meditational practice.

Study of each of these five primary Yoga Practice topics begin with a 2 day Introductory Module One Workshop as a starting point for the student. From there a Foundational range of follow-on 4 day Course Modules are available. Together they allow a uniquely comprehensive intensive exploration of all facets of Yoga Practice Techniques and Yoga Practice Theory.

The Yoga Practice Techniques and Theory Study Workshop and Course Modules total over 330 contact hours. However a Core level of combined modular study totalling 150 hours can be undertaken, leaving 180 hours of Intermediate and Advanced levels available for those interested in Further Studies.
The Core level 150 contact hours of Yoga Practice Techniques and Theory Study is comprised of:
- Āsana Practice Workshop Module One – 2 days or 10 hours
- Āsana Practice Course Modules Two to Five – 16 days or 80 hours
- Mudrā Practice Workshop Module One – 2 days or 10 hours
- Prāṇāyāma Practice Workshop Module One – 2 days or 10 hours
- Prāṇāyāma Practice Course Module Two – 4 days or 20 hours
- Dhyāna Practice Workshop Module One – 2 days or 10 hours
- Sounding and Chanting Practice Workshop Module One – 2 days or 10 hours
These Core Level Modules, along with the Core Level Associated Yoga and Lifestyle Texts Study Modules, is the prerequisite for students interested in Professional Training as a Yoga Teaching and Therapeutic Healthcare Practitioner:
The Intermediate and Advanced levels offer 180 contact hours of Yoga Practice Techniques and Theory as Further Studies Modules in the following areas:
- Intermediate & Advanced Āsana Practice – Course Module Six and Seven – 40 hours
- Advanced Mudrā Practice – Course Module Two – 20 hours
- Intermediate & Advanced Prāṇāyāma Practice – Course Modules Three – 20 hours
- Intermediate Dhyānam Practice – Course Module Two – 20 hours
- Yoga Sūtra Chanting Practice – Course Modules Two and Three – 40 hours
- Veda Mantra Chanting Practice – Course Modules Two and Three – 40 hours
Furthermore, as all the Modular Workshops and Courses are limited to a maximum of five students putting together a group has much more flexibility. They aim to facilitate an in-depth focus in terms of intensity, relevance to group situations, all within an exclusive learning environment.
The concept of viniyoga is the art of applying Yoga to the needs and aspirations of each person as a unique individual rather than fitting a number of individuals into the more generalised Westernised educational or physical fitness modalities of group class instruction.

Thus, using the term ‘viniyoga’ to describe a Yoga Class as a ‘Viniyoga Group Class’ or using the term to banner our group class teaching ‘style’ would in reality be a contradiction to how the concept was intended to be used according to the lifetime teachings of T Krishnamacharya and TKV Desikachar. In this context the term viniyoga relates solely to the transmission of Yoga within a 121 relationship.
The main aim behind the viniyoga or application of Yoga is to personalise Yoga practice according to the individual and their situation, through respecting our unique differences in age, gender, mental aptitude, physical health, social lifestyle, occupation and interests, together with developmental potentials according to the persons current situation and needs.
